GASTROINTESTINAL ALLERGIES

Gastrointestinal allergies start as early as infancy and manifest as colic from Cows Milk and/or Soy Bean Formula, frequently transitioning to atopic dermatitis later in infancy. Food allergies are frequently a factor in an infant's chronic ear infections as well.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (sometimes known as IBS) with alternating diarrhea and constipation is also commonly made worse by both environmental and food allergies. The theory of how pollens, dust, dander, and mold allergies make the GI system worse is obvious, the histamine released in the mucous is swallowed and increases gastric acidity. The mucous is also rich in pollens, allergens that have been washed from the nasal airways. When they reach the colon further reactions are possible. The mucous is also highly irritating and acidic and may add to irritation.

Gastro esophageal reflux has been reported in 40% of the patient population of an allergist's office. It may be a factor in severe asthma as well as other lung problems. It is made worse by acidic sinus drainage which is rich in Histamine.

Eosinophilic Esophagitis is a condition that is on the increase in the USA. Eosinophils are one of the major allergic mediator cells. Large numbers of these cells in any organ can cause lots of discomfort. Allergy evaluation should include both food and environmental allergens.

Gluten Sensitive Diseases include both Celiac disease and Dermatitis Herpetiformis. Though not an allergic disease, they are caused by an immune reaction (not Immunoglobulin E the Allergic Antibody). Treatment includes complete avoidance of Gluten.
