RUSH IMMUNOTHERAPY

This accelerated dosage schedule has been used for many years to desensitize patients more rapidly so they can tolerate allergenic exposures quickly. It is also used very effectively for allergies to insects such as bees, wasps, yellow jackets, and fire ants.

Procedure:

An appointment is scheduled with insurance pre-certification, if needed, for 5 or more hours. Pre-medication is required - this will involve taking medications prescribed by the physician. The medications are taken 1) the night prior to your appointment and 2) the morning of your appointment. Pre-medications MUST be taken as instructed or the Rush Immunotherapy procedure will be cancelled. Bring snacks, books, computer, Ipod, etc. The allergy vaccine will be increased from initial starting dose to as high as the protocol used for the particular case. A goal of having you near maintenance dose is expected. You will then start on weekly increasing doses for 7-8 weeks, then you may be able to increase the interval between injections.

Benefits of Rush Immunotherapy:
  • Save Time
  • Quicker Results
  • Less Cost
  • Quicker Control
Risks of Rush Immunotherapy:
  • Risks can be reduced by pre-medication and close monitoring
  • Increased risks due to rapid increase in vaccine potency and the number of injections
  • Possible skin rash, allergy, sinus, or asthma flare up (could last several days)
Risks can be reduced by communicating any change in allergy symptoms during the rush program.
